It is important that people understand that household pets should be included in disaster response! Please know your rights. You should not be turned away from transportation because you have a household pet (dog, cat, etc). You have the right to rescue with your animals. There are cases that certain shelters may not be able to accommodate household pets, but there should be resources available for separate housing for animals.
The PETS Act is an amendment to the Robert T Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. This amendment ensures that State and local emergency preparedness operational plans address the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals following a major disaster or emergency. It is required that States have and implement plans that include household animals.
