An Invitation to the 2016 Kansas Animal Response Exercise

Are you an animal response team volunteer or perhaps interested in becoming an animal response team volunteer ?  Are you a member of a VOAD interested in getting involved in this event?  Are you a veterinarian or a vet technician with the desire to help animals affected by disasters?  Perhaps you are a first responder and your agency would like to support this event?  If you answered YES to any of these questions check out the information below on a great disaster training event coming to Kansas!

WHO IS INVITED?

Groups encouraged to participate in the animal response volunteer training on Saturday, October 15 include:

  • Veterinarians and Vet Technicians
  • Active Animal Response Team Volunteers – trained for disaster or in the process of completing their disaster training requirements
  • NEW Animal Response Team Volunteers – if you have just joined the team, or want to join the team and begin your training with this event

Groups encouraged to participate and test their response resources during the Animal Response Drill on Sunday, October 16 include:

  • Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOADS)
  • Red Cross
  • Salvation Army
  • First Responders
  • Emergency Management
  • Law Enforcement
  • Fire and Rescue
  • CERT teams
  • Ham radio operator groups

Groups encouraged to participate as players, evaluators, or observers during the Animal Response Drill on Sunday, October 16 include:

WHEN IS IT?

The event will span a three day weekend with the opportunity to choose your level of participation.  It will be held at Crisis City, just south of Salina, Ks and runs Friday, October 14 through Sunday, October 16, 2016.  Details are provided below.

  • Friday, October 14 –  Volunteer Check-in and Set-up
    Friday will be used to setup for the event and to check-in volunteers.  
    Proposed Time Schedule:
    8:00am-2:00pm:  Time for block training instructors and/or event facilitators to bring in equipment and get organized for the event.
    3:00pm-4:00pm:  Review of weekend activities and facility with instructors and facilitators.
    4:00pm-6:00pm:  Check-in of animal response team volunteers
    6:00pm-7:00pm:  Dinner Break
    7:00pm-8:00pm:  Volunteer briefing for “All Hands On Deck”

  • Saturday, October 15 –   “All Hands On Deck”
    Training Blocks are a collection of hands-on sessions designed to teach skills by functional area.  Proposed blocks include:

    • Block 1:  Veterinary Medicine in Disaster Response
    • Block 2:  Large Animal Awareness in Disaster Response
    • Block 3:  Small Animal Sheltering in Disaster Response
    • Block 4:  Command Staff Roles in Disaster Response
    • Block 5:  Field Work in Disaster

Proposed Time Schedule:
7am-8:am: Final Volunteer Check-in
8am-6pm:  Block Training
6pm-7pm:  Dinner Break
7pm-8pm:  Team briefing and planning for “The ART of Disaster Response”
8pm-9pm:  Team building activities, including the opportunity to observe a night field search with Code 3 Associates

  • Sunday, October 16 –  “The ART of Disaster Response”
    The Animal Response Drill will be based on a tornado disaster that will provide a scenario for response volunteers practice the skills developed on Saturday, testing disaster response functionality and capabilities. 

Proposed Time Schedule:
7am-8am:     Briefing for observers, evaluators, and players
8pm-12pm:  The “ART” of Disaster Response sheltering exercise
12pm-1pm:   Lunch,  hot wash and event surveys
1pm-2pm:     Demobilization and check-out

Please note for liability reasons ALL participants must be 18 years of age.  

WHERE IS IT?

Crisis City:  A multi-use, fully functional training complex, operated by Kansas Department of Emergency Management, for local, state, and federal responders, Emergency Management professionals, public and private industry safety professionals, and military operations in support of civil authorities.

HOW DO I REGISTER?

Registration will open in August and details on the Saturday training blocks will be provided at that time.  Pre-registration is required.  The cost for animal response team volunteers to participate, ONLY $60 – Early Bird Fee!   That includes 1 day of hands-on training, a functional exercise on day 2, night activities and demonstrations, 2 nights lodging , 5 meals and an opportunity to use Crisis City!   To be sure you stay informed on event details as they become available “sign up for news”!
